New Haven Register Sports Editor Sean Barker has been promoted to statewide sports editor for Journal Register Company’s publications in Connecticut, including its three dailies, the Register, The Middletown Press and The Register Citizenof Torrington, and more than a dozen weekly newspapers.
He’ll be leading efforts to deepen a “digital first” culture in our sports departments. That will include strengthening breaking news reporting on the web and via SMS alerts and social media, blogging, community engagement and enterprise reporting. The move is part of a bigger newsroom reorganization that shifted resources from print production and invested in Breaking News, Community Engagement and Investigative and In-Depth Reporting.
Barker has been sports editor at the New Haven Register since March 2006. He joined the paper as assistant sports editor in November 1999 after covering the NFL, UConn football and men’s basketball, and serving as high school sports editor, at the Connecticut Post. He started his career at the Evening Sentinel in Ansonia in 1991.
He is a past chairman of the Associated Press Sports Editors organization, a past president of the Connecticut Sports Writers Alliance and recipient of the Art McGinley Award for Meritorious Service. Earlier this year, he was presented with the first Dave Solomon Media Award.
Barker is a Shelton native and 1991 graduate of Franklin Pierce College. He lives in Middletown with his wife Jennifer and children, Ethan, 10, and Emily, 5.
